Muscle weakness can appear after inactivity or injury, but may also indicate neurological or other medical problems. Understanding the cause comes first.
General educational information, not a diagnosis. Clinical review has not been recorded.
What happens during an assessment?
Assessment may look at distribution and onset of weakness, functional ability, fatigue, balance and medical background.
What might a care plan include?
Where medically appropriate, graded strength, task practice and a programme adjusted to progress may be useful.
Questions patients ask
Is muscle weakness rehabilitation right for me?
There is no one treatment plan that suits everyone. The first step is to review the symptoms, medical history and functional goals, then decide whether physiotherapy, additional medical assessment or a different service is appropriate.
What should I bring to an assessment?
Please bring relevant reports or imaging if you already have them, a current medication list when relevant and a brief description of what daily activities have become difficult. You do not need to obtain scans solely to book a first enquiry.
Safety and next steps
Sudden or rapidly worsening weakness, particularly with speech, facial or balance changes, requires emergency medical attention.
